Job Type

The New Zealand Law Society is responsible for the regulation of the legal profession. Their Inspectors visit law firms that operate trust accounts, to ensure compliance with the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006, and accompanying rules and regulations, using a customised risk based approach. They are seeking a skilled senior professional to join their experienced Auckland based team to deliver these important review processes.

This is an interesting, varied and challenging role, which includes:

  • Encouraging good practices in the handling of money entrusted to lawyers through education
  • Reviewing trust accounts and trust accounting systems, in terms of their alignment with the financial assurance scheme
  • Seeking to detect theft or other behaviour likely to result in the loss of client money
  • Conducting investigations into the financial activities of lawyers and law firms

This position will most likely suit a chartered accountant or lawyer who has a strong interest in trust accounting, and is seeking to combine variety with some autonomy. The following experience and skills are being sought:

  • Investigation experience from an accounting, gaming, charities, legal, Police, Serious Fraud Office, IRD or similar background
  • An ability to understand and work pragmatically with legislation
  • Flexibility and the willingness to undertake a variety of work
  • A high standard of written and oral communication skills, with the ability to produce concise well-structured and well-reasoned written material
  • A strong team player with the ability to work independently
  • A high level of computer literacy and ability
  • The ability to plan and structure a diverse workload
  • Good judgement, discretion and analytical skills
  • Willingness to travel and work nationally
  • Fluency in mandarin is highly desirable, but not essential

This is a unique opportunity to join a great team with a good culture, and to work with a range of diverse legal firms to positively influence their financial management activities.Applications Close: Midday on Friday, 24 May 2019
